The Department of Materials and Production Technology Engineering was established in 1978 to deliver a bachelor degree in production technology, and later a degree in materials engineering, which began a decade ago. Our department has also played an active role in the metallurgical community in Thailand, and in 2012 we were the host of the Thailand metallurgy conference, with the participation of academics and individuals representing the metal industry in Thailand and abroad. Nowadays we offer degrees in materials engineering at all three levels: bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. Our students and graduates have gained experience in internships and in working toward their professional career in such prominent companies as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Samsung Electronics, Minibae, Maktec, PTTEP, IRPC, Thai Parkerizing, POSCO Thainox, Thai Tokhen Thermo, SSI, Bangkok Glass, and Michelin.

For the year 2013, we have commenced a bilingual program for a bachelor degree in materials engineering, emphasizing metals. This is an innovative program for the coming of the ASEAN economic community when communication skills in English of engineers will become prominent. This program is the first and only program of its kind in Thailand and will offer our students a solid future as materials engineers in major industries, e.g. the automotive, electronic, petroleum, petrochemical, and metal industries. It will also make our graduates competent in English so that they can pursue their careers in ASEAN as well as in global industrial/business communities.

Research and development
Research and development in the department is organized along the lines of a wide extent area of materials and related processes, including metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, along with basic studies on the structure and property of materials, investigations and evaluations of appropriate synthesis and manufacturing processes, and analysis and optimization of improving quality and applications. Thanks to the competent faculty members of the department in collaboration with institutions at KMUTNB and other organizations, both domestic and international, tens of journal publications, books, innovations and patents, as well as presentations in renowned academic conferences, have been generated in recent years.
